Story

Francis West was a Philadelphia merchant. His father, William West, was appointed to the nine-member Pennsylvania Indian Commission to barter with the local tribes. Francis, like his father, was a major supplier of goods sold. Francis West in company with his brother John West under the firm of Francis & John West were popular merchants in 1791 and for many years after. Their place of business was between Spruce and Walnut on the Westside at 937 S. Front Street, (1785) and 108 S. Front Street, (1791). The company made voyages to England, Holland, Europe to buy cloth, tobacco, linens, wines, and conduct discussions of economic conditions.

The Philadelphia Cash Accounts, 9 May–22 September 1787, includes this note: GW (George Washington) does not record receiving payment from the state of Virginia during July, but GW wrote this order, dated “Philadelphia 28th July 1787”: “Sir, Please to pay to Messrs Francis and John West on order, the sum of One hundred pounds Virginia Currency, and place it to acct of Yr most Obedt Hble Servt Go: Washington.” GW directed the order to “Beverley Randolph Lt Govr of Virginia.” Below GW’s signature is written “Philadelphia August 2. 1787. This bill will be paid on sight,” signed “Edm: Randolph” (Virginia Cavalcade, Winter 1951, 43). GW left the place blank where someone, probably Edmund Randolph, inserted the names of John and Francis West.

There is a record (Lineage Book, 1812, listed below) of Francis fighting prior to the War of 1812. "West Francis b Philadelphia Pa 14 September 1761 d Philadelphia 29 June 1843 m Mary Davis Nixon 1793 Private 1st Troop City Cavalry Philadelphia Militia under Captain John Dunlap 1794 (the time of the Whiskey Rebellion Trials), also under Captains Stephen Kingston and William Lawrence Enlisted 1786 and 1787 Member 2nd Company 3rd Regt when discharged in 1794 Ancestor of 1031 9566"
